Nexus by Ryan W. Aslesen Far from the Alaskan wilderness, North Korea, and the wilds of South America, author Ryan W. Aslesen brings back his favorite hero in Nexus, a fantastic addition to the Crucible series.

Max Ahlgren has been through hell and back a dozen times, facing down some of the most horrific creatures the world has ever known, but there are plenty of monsters lying in wait among mankind. Tasked once again with an impossible mission, this master of survival must put his revenge quest for his family’s murder on hold. With a new family to protect, along with one of the most sought-after pieces of tech on the planet, Ahlgren embarks on a deadly cross-country journey with danger at every turn.

As with Aslesen’s other action-heavy sci-fi novels, Nexus brilliantly combines near-future tech, shadowy conspiracies, and explosive action scenes to create a visceral and compelling read. Though this novel veers away from the horror elements of previous books in the Crucible series, it makes up for this lack with more impactful human drama. Having lost his own family, the parallels to Ahlgren’s new protective detail are impossible to miss, leaving plenty of room for powerful narration and genuine character depth to emerge between all the flying bullets.

While some of the dialogue is stiff and jarring, the pacing of the novel is consistent, and there is a clear focus on original narration and creative use of language. Packed with gritty realism and a protagonist who only gets better as this series progresses, Nexus is a mature, nuanced, and gripping novel that will leave Aslesen’s fans eager for the next installment.
