A momentous and impressive display of carefully crafted poetry, The Humbling and Other Poems by Robert J. Tiess is a complex yet accessible collection.
Balancing experimental rhyme schemes and free verse poems with traditional patterns and melodic bursts of language, the breadth of Tiess’ technical skill is impressive. Meticulous in his meter and self-imposed structures, it is clear how much curation and editing has gone into every line of this collection. The imagery ranges from predictable and iconic to radically creative and clever, but the rhythmic flow of word choice stands out as the most exceptional element.
Broken into seven distinct sections, these stirring pieces explore a vast range of thought and personal reflection, from our interior kingdoms and the rich frontiers of nature to abstract musings on societal ills and the literary potential of introspection. “Metatheatre” is a standout piece, a Shakespearean reflection on the grand show of life, yet urgent and modern in its message. On the other end of the experimental spectrum, “Personal Copernican Revolution,” intrigues the perspective with far fewer words, forcing readers to simultaneously play with theme, form, intent, and language.
Though errors are incredibly rare, there are occasional proofreading slips (“sure” vs “surf”). That aside, these are powerful and personal poems that should absolutely be read aloud and savored.
